Governor Hogan Releases Statement Following Death of Queen Elizabeth II

Maryland Governor Larry Hogan has issued a statement following the death of the longest reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, who died at her Balmoral residence in Scotland Thursday, Sept. 8 at the age of 96.

"The Queen took great care over the last seven decades to deepen the meaning of the Special Relationship between the United States and Great Britain. Maryland was proud to welcome her majesty during her first state visit to our country in 1957, and again during her last state visit here in 2007", states Governor Hogan.

"Operation Unicorn", the official codename for the procedures followed should the Queen pass in Scotland, has begun to take place following the great monarch's passing as her funeral arrangements are officially set into motion.

Prince Charles, 73, immediately became the King Charles III following his mother's death and is expected to be formally announced as King in the following hours.
